With a warmth, knowledge of wine and passion for the craft of hospitality that is infectious,
Sonja Eberly, Head Sommelier and manager of Smith & Sheth’s Oenothèque, Wine Lounge and Heretaunga Wine Studio is affectionately described as the local wine ‘guru’.
Having spent the last 15+ years working as a hospitality professional and sommelier, she combines a genuine love of people with her experience in wine. For Sonja, exploring the world of wine has never been just about memorizing facts from a book. In between roles as the wine director for a number of urban wine bars in Washington, D.C., Sonja has travelled the world working wine vintages in five separate wine regions. Her belief is there is no better way of understanding wine than by absorbing yourself in the vineyard and cellar and getting your hands dirty!
Her love for people, culture and wine eventually led Sonja to New Zealand where she has lived for 5 years. Having worked previously as the sommelier at the Farm at Cape Kidnappers, Sonja joined the Smith & Sheth family in 2018, helping to open, run and develop both the Oenothèque and the Heretaunga Studio in Havelock North. Sonja is WSET advanced level certified and is in the midst of completing her WSET Diploma.
